Exercise 17 - Collage Design

The next project is for you to make a collage.  That is a collection of images that combine to make a new image.  Use Photoshop (and Illustrator if needed) to make a collage "painting" about you and what is around you in your life.

You must AT LEAST include the following:
1.  A self portrait or animal (remember 1st quarter drawing?  Or a photograph or a self portrait using Photobooth.
2.  Text
3.  1 building or 1 object that you photographed last class.

You may include additional items if you wish.

Try to use opacity changes on a layer or two in order to see through objects.

The image must be saved as a JPEG

Save the image as period#_lastname_firstname_17x.jpg and turn into Mr. Komar Dropbox

Exercise 16 - Spell "Tucson High School" in Photos

Use the cameras provided and walk Tucson High School campus to "spell out" the name of our school with photos of objects.  Today, try to get the photos.  On Wednesday, spend the time putting the images together to turn in. 

Steps:
1.  Follow the procedures to check out a camera.  

• Fill out slip of paper.
• Give paper to teacher and get camera.  

2.  Search the courtyards for objects or letters that spell Tucson High School.  

3.  Return to the class at the appointed time.

4.  Use Photoshop to spell out TUCSON HIGH SCHOOL from the photos you captured.

• Set the size of the image to 8.5"x11" at 150 ppi.

5.  Save as period#_lastname_firstname_16x.psd and drop into Mr. Komar Dropbox.

Remember that the day after is All Saints Day.  You may also make an image, animation or photo of a saint.

Or you could do an Old Testament figure.  (Jewish)

Or you could do something from Navajo culture like the Yei bi chei (Dine)

Or you could do something from another culture like geometric patters for an Islamic image. (Muslim)

Exercise 15: Adjustment panel in Photoshop

Our next step through Photoshop is to dig into the "Adjustment Panel".  

This is the area most often used when you are asked to clean up a photo or improve a photo that is not up to good quality, for example faded or too dark.  

Go to the following web site and read each section as you work:

You are given the broken file and your goal is the ending photo.  Each photo only needs one change to fix.  (HINT:  Go button by button on the adjustment panel...one button per picture)

Find the original photos in the Shared folder under CMT.

When you change the file, save it under any name on your computer.

Use Adobe Bridge

1.  Make a Contact Sheet II (Tools > Photoshop > Contact Sheet II) in Photoshop.

2.  Save the Contact Sheet as a JPEG and turn in to the Mr. Komar Dropbox as

 period#_lastname_firstname_15x

In Summary:

1.  Read website listed above for how to use Adjustment Panel.

2.  Find the files to fix in the Shared folder.

3.  Fix the files, only one piece needs to be changed on each file.

4.  Save files on computer.

5.  Open Adobe Bridge and turn the fixed images into a Contact Sheet using the Tools for Photoshop.

6.  Save the contact sheet as period#_lastname_firstname_15x.jpg (As a JPEG file).

7.  Turn in the JPEG file to the Mr. Komar Dropbox.

The final picture was taken in Český Krumlov which is part of the Slovak Republic.  Click here to see where it is located.  This site was a stopping point in travels for the Austrian empire.

So you want to make your graphics move?

Now you can use Photoshop to make your graphics "animated" just like you see on the web.

I am looking for an animation that is not too complicated but has a simple and clear design.  At least two objects must move in your animation.  Have fun with it!

CAUTION!!!

If you want your graphic to ROTATE then you cannot use the above procedure!

You have to make layers, one layer at a time with a small change in each layer.  Then click on the upper right corner of the "Animation" box and you can "Make Frames from Layers..."

Exercise 12 - Photoshop: Redesign History

Welcome back class,

We begin the 2nd Quarter with Adobe Photoshop.  After this we will work with some photography to incorporate Raster Images.

Adobe Photoshop is the industry-standard image editing software, used worldwide by professional photographers, amateur photographers, and designers who want to perfect their digital images.

The idea is to change history. Alter an instantly recognizable photograph so that the context has been significantly changed. The appearance of the original photograph must remain intact. The new situation must still look believable.

 *DISCLAIMER* This project is not intended to make light of some very serious and often tragic situations. Rather, it is an effort to teach Photoshop skills in a manner which turns tragedy into creativity. The idea is to change the historical context of very famous photographs.

You will learn how to use the 3 most common selection tools, copy, paste, how to edit a pasted object and make the picture look like it was there in the first place.

1: Choose 3 different photos and change the context of the photo using photoshop.  

You will find the photos to use in the Mr. Komar Shared Folder under Graphic Design > Exercise 8 - History Photos.  

For one of the photos, you may choose a site from around the world and put yourself there.

Follow my step by step instructions in the initial presentation to get started.  You will find the presentation in the same folder.  

2: Make sure the photo still has its realistic look to it

3: You will have to turn in all 10 files with names like below:
1_lastname_firstname_12x1
1_lastname_firstname_12x2
1_lastname_firstname_12x3 (until you get to file #10)

I used to have students turn in a folder but we can no longer do that because of permissions and Apple security designs.
